Dear Colleagues,

Before I start this May newsletter I would like to greet all of you with the day of the Bulgarian Culture – 24th of May. We celebrate this day, all Bulgarians around the world, united by our Heritage of the two Great Bulgarian Scholars and Philosophers Constantine Cyril and Methody. Their legacy lives in our hearts, throughout our goals for higher education, innovation and recognition, not only for us, but also for our kids. That is the spark that gave us enlightenment for generation after generations; and I am really proud with it.

On April 18th, 2004 (as was advertised), we had the second General Meeting of our Association of this year general Meeting of our Association. The weather was not in our favor, pouring rain, so the attendance was moderate. Our guest-speaker from CAPE – Council for Access to the Profession of Engineering couldn’t make it.

1) On our Meeting we presented the latest in the mail:

- Press release from PEO – Professional Engineers Ontario- for their new President and Governing Council and Annual Award Ceremony for outstanding dedication to the profession by 10 Professional Engineers.

- OACETT – The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists – will have a presentation for those with an engineering technology or applied science background to inform them for the structure and the benefits of joining their association, on Monday, May 3, 2004 10:00a.m. to noon at the Etobicoke Civic Centre (City Hall), 399 The West Mall, in the Council Chamber room, main floor. (The presentation is free of charge).

-  ONIP.online – Ontario Network for Internationally trained Professionals.  Edition 2004 of "Foreign-educated engineers * Admission guide to PEO" ISBN 0-9733611-0-5 is now available. The booklet has 46 pages, many diagrams and figures, and detailed information not only on what documentation is required by PEO (which you can find for free on www.peo.on.ca) but WHY and HOW to apply for this critical professional step for every foreign-educated engineer.
In an effort to address concerns regarding the difficulty and lack of information available to foreign-educated engineers about obtaining their Professional Engineering license, Prof. Stelian George-Cosh has developed a “Foreign –Educated Engineers Admission Guide to Professional Engineers Ontario”.
Prof. Stelian George-Cosh, MASc., P.Eng, is himself a foreign-educated engineer who has lived through the process of earning his Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license in Ontario.
This Guide will provide valuable information to those wishing to earn their P.Eng. in Ontario and to help dispel some of the rumors and misconceptions about the process that many newcomers to the country may have. Mr. George-Cosh explains all of the steps required to earn a license and the reasoning behind them. He also helps direct the prospective engineer to the resources necessary to satisfy the requirements. The information presented is based not only on his own research, insight and personal experience earning his license, but also from his years as a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) Experience Requirement Committee.

The guidebook, authored by Prof. Stelian George-Cosh, which briefly describes the Canadian legal system and provides some background into the history and formation of the current process as well as explains the requirements for a license and the authorities who govern and regulate the process. The booklet price is $10 (incl. shipping & handling in Canada). Those interested can send a cheque for $10 payable to ROMBUS, at 301-265 Westcourt Place, Waterloo, ON N2L 6E4.

And here are some of the recommendations:

“The Guide is precise, flavored with interesting details, constructed with comparative examples and enriched with guidelines based on the author’s experience. It is engineered for engineers!”

Mr. Ioan Covalcic, Kitchener, Jan 2004.

“It is good and very useful. I prepared my Experience Record and the interview using it and I am glad that I attended the seminar and bought the Guide.”

Mr. Wang Keng Loo, Toronto, March 2004

“It provides good insight for preparing an application and attending the interview. I personally feel that for the price of $10 the Guide provides more value. Thanks.

Mr. Sanjay Acharya, Mississauga, March 2004

“Not only that I passed the interview but the whole process took much less then I have had expected. Every applicant should read this Guide. Thank you so much.

Ms. Pauline Rajeev, Toronto March 2004

More than 300 copies were distributed form the previous edition and I hope that more will be sold from this edition.

Best wishes to ABEC,

Prof. Stelian George-Cosh, PEng

I would like to inform all Members of ABEC, that we are advertising in the book (2004 edition) so we will get a free copy in addition to this one we have already. During the next meeting you can look into it. In my opinion, this Guide is presented as an industrial flow-chart, so you know in every step what you have done, where in the process you are and what is the next requirement.

2) In the news –we have completed the design of ABEC’s stamp; the Logo is going slow with different ideas and our website is under construction.

At the Meeting we discussed also the Member’s list on the website with introduction of business portfolio - one page (as map, diagrams, figures, drawing) or picture as link of the name – your personal choice. The picture always leaves much lasting impression and is a natural invitation for further communication. I have seen many business websites with different mechanical innovations and their specifications. Excellent work, well designed, some pretty buildings, but the person and the face are missing. In many cases that may be a little cold. Our decisions are based on many factors – not just infrastructure. Knowing (the personality and the character) and seeing the people whom we will be dealing and trying to communicate with should never be pre-cluded from this our decision making process.

We received our picture of the first meeting as a registered Association, from Mr. Plamen Nikolov - Professional Photographer, who did on excellent job.  We are going to make another picture for the rest of the Members, so every thing will be documented on the web. We discussed also about placing your picture on the upper right corner of your resume. I don’t see any problem with that. After all if you want to be #1, go ahead, you will be #1, but don’t stop and look around and ask questions, just go ahead and run for the finish line. Don’t ask your employment Councilor. He or She they don’t understand us the “front runners”. The Councilors are there, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to advise you what are the methods to succeed according to their policies. Be innovative and not policies constrained. It is your run. Every one of you has the potentials to be #1. In our educational system, remember, we studied every thing by heart. I see that in your eyes on the group picture.

And the last but not in any case the least, we started the campaign for collecting the membership fees. We will use them for the web site and for our office supplies. In the meantime ABEC received donations and two coffee machines  (x12cups). We are very appreciative for the support from our donors and wish them long life and good health.  During the summer months, our Treasurer Tonia Bojkova will work in the Great North, so you can send the cheque payable to ABEC to my address:  Pauline Lawrence, 128 Gardner Place Maple, Ontario L6A 1C3  or you can give to Nicolay Paskalev Tel: 416 839-1569. You will get recite from Tonia Bojkova. Official recites for tax purpose will be issued before the end of the year, after we print the forms with our registered number and our logo.

For our new Members, I am attaching (Archive - letter 1/04) and some schedules of Vaughan and Markham COSTI offices for helping with Dynamic resumes, strategies for search for work, or latest news for Internationally Trained Engineers. Please contact:
