New Wireless Sensor Network Keeps Tabs On the Environment

by Staff Writers
Edmonton, Canada (SPX) Jun 09, 2008

Have you ever wondered what happens in the rainforest when no one is looking? Research in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Science may soon be able to answer that question. The departments of computing science and earth and atmospheric science have been working together to create a Wireless Sensor Network that allows for the clandestine data collection of environmental factors in remote locations and its monitoring from anywhere in the world where the Internet is available.

Once the display-house prototype is tested and customized, at least two sites are to be fully deployed in the fall, one likely in the Brazilian rainforest, and the other in a forest in Panama.

The research team, including Pawel Gburzynski, Mario Nascimento, and Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa, recently launched EcoNet, a functional model of a WSN for environmental monitoring in the display house in the University of Alberta's Agriculture/Forestry Centre.

The display house hosts a small but feature-rich environment that mimics that of a tropical forest. Using a WSN, a number of sensors can continuously monitor factors like temperature and luminosity and will process, store and transmit data co-operatively and wirelessly with other sensors to generate data that can then be collected and made available to users virtually anywhere on the globe.

The sensors represent a technology for researchers to monitor diverse phenomena continuously and inconspicuously.

Having the data continuously monitored by researchers substantially increases the chances of uncovering anomalies early enough to investigate them promptly and thoroughly.

The overall framework of WSN can also be extended for use in other closely related scenarios such as monitoring potentially dangerous situations like hazardous waste disposal, or hard-to-witness phenomena such as ice cap movements in the Arctic.

The opportunities these sensors will provide to scientists are paramount in a global environment that is changing at an ever-increasing pace.

Once the display-house prototype is tested and customized, at least two sites are to be fully deployed in the fall, one likely in the Brazilian rainforest, and the other in a forest in Panama.

China biggest CO2 emitter last year: Dutch agency

THE HAGUE, June 13 (AFP) Jun 13, 2008

China's carbon dioxide emissions in 2007 were about 14 percent higher than the United States and accounted for two-thirds of the global rise, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) said Friday.

With an eight percent national increase, China's carbon dioxide emissions contributed the bulk of last year's 3.1 percent global rise in CO2 emissions, according to a statement released on the last day of a United Nations conference on climate change in Bonn, Germany.

"With this, China tops the list of CO2 emitting countries, having about a quarter share in global CO2 emissions (24 percent)," it said.

The United States was second with 21 percent, while the European Union was at 12 percent, India eight percent and Russia six percent, said the statement.

Cement clinker production was a major cause of the emissions, and with an increase of 10 percent in 2007 China now accounted for about 51 percent of global cement production, said the PBL.

"After the earthquake which recently hit the Sichuan province, it may be expected that the rebuilding of houses and roads for over five million people will cause the cement demand to soar even further," it said.

Warmer winter weather and high fuel prices contributed to a two percent drop in CO2 emissions in Europe last year, it added.

But in the US, a cold winter and warm summer contributed to rising carbon emissions from heating and cooling functions. Overall in the US last year, CO2 emissions rose by 1.8 percent.

"Since population size and level of economic development differ considerably between countries, the emissions expressed per person show a largely different ranking," added the agency.

The US topped the list of C02 emissions per person measured in metric tonnes with 19.4, followed by Russia with 11.8, the EU with 8.6, China with 5.1 and India with 1.8.

The figures were compiled from recently published British Petroleum energy data and cement production data for 2007.

In the current global warming talks, the US and other Western nations have balked at making mandatory cuts in greenhouse gases as developing nations like China are not required to slash emissions under the UN climate change framework.

U-blox, Paragon and Magna Introduce Rear-View Mirror Navigator

by Staff Writers
Thalwil, Switzerland, (SPX) Jun 12, 2008

By integrating the navigator into the rear-view mirror of the car, cumbersome installation, power cables and limited views to the road become a thing of the past.

U-blox has partnered with Paragon and Magna to develop the rear-view mirror navigator. The MirrorPilot Navigator is a fully functional GPS navigation system, including GPS receiver, antenna and speaker built into a self-dimming rear-view mirror.

This innovative navigation system simply replaces the standard rear-view mirror of a car, leaving thecar cockpit free of cables, and includes a remote control for ease of use.

Software features include various routes and device options, destination storage for recent destinations and over 800.000 points of interest. Moreover, the MirrorPilot Navigator automatically zooms in at crossroad and junctions and redirects users at traffic jams.

The navigator currently uses u-blox' LEA-4S GPS module, whose award-winning SuperSense weak signal tracking functionality enables accurate and reliable positioning even in difficult signal conditions such as parking lots and dense urban environments.

A new version is being designed that incorporates the 50-channel LEA-5S module, featuring 1-second acquisition performance.

"We were looking for a small, cost-efficient GPS receiver that would out-perform standard navigators in terms of positioning accuracy and reliability. u-blox' compact LEA-4S GPS module offered outstanding performance at the right price," said Frank-Horst Schank, General Manager at paragon.

"Moreover, the module's standalone architecture and ease of integration reduced our development efforts, enabling us to enter the market in record time."

"The MirrorPilot cleverly solves several of the problems typically associated with the installation and use of external navigation devices. By integrating the navigator into the rear-view mirror of the car, cumbersome installation, power cables and limited views to the road become a thing of the past", said Armin Boshenz, Area Sales Manager at u-blox.

"We are proud to have been selected as technology provider for such an innovative product".
